Are you referring to a sender or receiver scenario?
For a sender it is good practice to have a unique certificate for each user that is authenticating with the adapter engine. For a receiver scenario it is reasonable to have a single client certificate signed by a third-party and then re-use that certificate to authenticate with multiple web servers.
